PORTLAND (AP) — The Portland City Council is considering an ordinance to protect open spaces, but not the park whose potential sale triggered a similar protection effort by citizens.
A group fighting the city’s plan to sell a large part of Congress Square Plaza to a hotel owner wants a June referendum on its petition to add 35 parks to the city’s list of protected properties and require the approval of eight councilors before any are sold.
The Portland Press Herald reported (http://bit.ly/1gzeUna) the council will decide March 3 whether to schedule that referendum, but it also may adopt a similar ordinance and then ask voters about the petition. The council’s ordinance would establish a list of 25 protected parks — not including Congress Square Plaza.
