1924 – 2014

POLAND — Jennie M. (Varrell) Thurlow, 90, passed away at her home in Poland on Sunday, March 2.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1924, in Lawrence, Mass., the daughter of the late Raymond Varrell and Elizabeth (Hanscom) Varrell. When she was a young girl, her family moved to Poland. After completing high school, she married her beloved husband of 71 years, Lawrence H. Thurlow Sr., on Nov. 3, 1942.

Jennie never had a job that she did not like. During World War II, she was a cashier at W. T. Grant in Portland. After that, she was a switchboard operator at the Poland Telephone Co., until everyone had phones they could dial themselves. Finally, she spent 28 years at the Poland Spring Post Office.

In her spare time, Jennie enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, writing in her journal and spending time with her family. All those she leaves behind will remember her with love and cherish all the memories that they have of her, which is the best testament to a life well-lived.

Jennie is survived by her husband; their four children, Lawrence H. Thurlow Jr. and wife, Letha, of Poland, Dawn Brackett and husband, Gayland, of Poland, Patricia Daignault and husband, Daniel, of Auburn, and Virginia Johnson and husband, Joseph, of Buxton; seven grandchildren, Lawrence H. Thurlow III, Bethany Morrison, Tamara Holden, Andrew Daignault, Simon Daignault, Jennie Johnson and Macy Jo Johnson; as well as six great-grandchildren, Clayton Morrison, Brody Brackett, Tara Lawson, Aiva Brackett, Aurora Holden and Tyler Daignault. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law, Brenda Varrell; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her siblings: David Varrell; Charles Varrell and wife, Georgietta, whom she was particularly close to; Norris Varrell; Phyllis Chernewski; and Rose Frees, and their spouses.
