RUMFORD — Mountain Valley High School will host renowned motivational speaker John Jenkins from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in Muskie Auditorium. After the presentation, Jenkins will lead an optional question-and-answer session for those students, teachers and community members who wish to remain.

Teachers at MVHS have noticed an overall decline in student motivation to study and learn. Some students refuse to do homework. Others will not complete projects unless it can be done during class time.

Principal Matt Gilbert explained, “Rather than complain and become frustrated, some of the teachers gathered after school two afternoons to brainstorm some ideas to help with student motivation. One idea was to bring in a speaker for students, their parents and the community.”

English teacher John Bell suggested former Auburn mayor and gubernatorial candidate John Jenkins. Bell volunteered to contact Jenkins and arrange a presentation.

Gilbert wrote in a letter of invitation to community leaders, “The theme of Mr. Jenkins’ presentation for students is aspirations and life goal-setting; his ‘Inspired to be GREAT!’ program has been very well-received by a number of Maine high schools over the past few years. We’re excited about John’s upcoming visit and hope to build on the inspiration and energy he is sure to generate among our students.”

According to peptalk.com, “Jenkins has more than 35 years of successful experience in promoting personal and professional development. He has lectured and trained throughout the U.S., Japan and The People’s Republic of China.”

Parents and community members are urged to reserve a seat by calling the high school at 364-4547. Seating will begin at 12:45 p.m.
