1944 – 2014

AUBURN — Douglas H. Hayden, a lifelong resident of the Lewiston-Auburn area, died Saturday, March 15, at the Hospice House surrounded by his family.

Born to Robert C. and G. Alice (Cahoon) Hayden on Oct. 14, 1944, Doug was educated in Auburn schools and graduated from Edward Little High School, with the Class of 1962. He attended the Auburn Maine School of Commerce and graduated with an associate degree in accounting. He worked most recently for Paychex in Auburn. He also served in the Army Reserve.

Doug married Suzanne Jazynka on Sept. 12, 1970, and they had two beautiful children whom they raised in Auburn. Doug loved spending time in Nantucket, where his mother grew up and where his aunts lived out their lives. Having spent the summers of his youth there, he passed on his love for the island to his children, traveling there many times every year to visit family.

He loved to entertain and often hosted large gatherings at his home, which always seemed to be the center of the neighborhood. He enjoyed gardening and maintaining his home. Doug had a passion for music, movies, musical theater and antique automobiles. He loved spending time with his children, his wife and their many friends and neighbors.

Doug is survived by his wife of more than 43 years, Suzanne; his daughter, Julie, of New York, N.Y.; and his son, Michael, of Maitland, Fla. He is also survived by one granddog, Buddy, of New York; one grandson, Douglas, of Florida; a brother, David and wife, Barbara Hayden; a sister, Deborah and husband, Paul Rybeck; stepmother, Diana Hayden; aunt, Patricia Langlin; sister-in-law, Beverly Nuccio; and several cousins and nieces, and a nephew.

He was predeceased by his parents; several aunts and uncles; in-laws, Sophie (Delekto Jazynka) and Paul E.V. Grondin; brother-in-law, Joseph Nuccio; and one dog, Peanut.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful and caring staff at the Hospice House for making Doug’s final days peaceful and comfortable, and for treating the family with warmth and kindness.
