RUMFORD – The Board of Selectmen unanimously voted Thursday evening to accept a $5,377 bid from ER Field Fire Safety Systems and Supplies to install a fire alarm system at the Rumford Public Library.

Librarian Luke Sorenson said a representative of the Lewiston company visited the library after the system failed and “did the minimum amount to fix the system and get it up and running.

“Right now, the plan is to have ER Field update all of the fire alarms in the library and install new smoke and heat detectors so they meet safety standards,” he said.

The company provided two bids, one for $4,977  and the other for $5,377. The latter would provide a remote display panel with key-enabled functions.

Rumford fire Chief Robert Chase said the remote display panel would allow the Fire Department to “get a more general idea of where a fire is located in the library” as opposed to “going into the basement to where the actual fire alarm system is located.

“I’ve been telling all businesses that are installing fire alarm systems into their buildings that this is the way to go,” Chase said. “It’s a good investment.”

In other business, Chase told selectmen the Fire Department is monitoring the Androscoggin River for “flood conditions.”

“Right now, everything is right around where it’s supposed to be for this time of year,” he said, “however, I was informed that if these conditions that we’ve been having lately continue when April hits, our flood risk increases exponentially on a week-by-week basis. We’re going to continue to monitor the situation.

“I just wanted you all to be aware,” Chase said. “You all have a role in the town’s emergency plan, including how you want us to react to this. I just wanted to bring it to your attention.”

Selectmen also unanimously voted to approve a taxi cab license for Veteran’s Taxi, LLC.
