PORTLAND — The Maine Credit Union League has announced the results of the 2013 CUs’ Share for ME Program, which tracks volunteer hours as reported by credit unions.
The 2013 total was the second-highest ever, with nearly 37,500 hours documented by 40 credit unions and close to 1,000 volunteers contributing their time for a community project or event at some point during the year. The value of the volunteer hours, according to the Points Of Light Foundation, represents nearly $800,000.
CUs’ Share for ME highlights the volunteer efforts of credit unions throughout the year. In 2013, Maine credit unions contributed an average of 3,121 volunteer hours each month with an average of 334 credit union staff volunteering each month.
Several credit unions with local ties were among the top five in most volunteer hours documented, including Rainbow FCU of Lewiston, with branches in Auburn, Mechanic Falls, Rumford and South Paris with 3,078 at No. 3; Five County CU of Bath, with local branches in Auburn, Lewiston and Lisbon, ranked No. 4 with 2,765 hours; and Community CU of Lewiston, with a branch in Auburn, was No. 5 at 2,015 hours.
Credit unions with local ties ranking in the top five in terms of number of staff that volunteer each month include Five County CU and Rainbow FCU.
Other credit unions with local ties that contributed volunteer hours and reported the results included Central Maine FCU of Lewiston, with a branch in Auburn; Monmouth FCU of Monmouth, with a branch in Greene; Otis FCU of Jay; Oxford FCU of Mexico, with a branch in Norway; and Sabattus Regional CU of Sabattus.
