PLYMOUTH, Mass. — Emmett E. Whelan, of Plymouth, Mass., died on Thursday, May 22, at the age of 88.

Emmett was born in Boston and grew up in Charlestown, Mass., where he lived before moving to Plymouth in 1982. Emmett was a 40-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service, from which he retired as a supervisor at the South Postal Annex in Boston. He served in the U.S Navy during World War II on the LST 559.

He enjoyed gardening, history and was an avid reader. Emmett especially was fond of traveling with his wife, Theresa, and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Emmett is survived by his beloved wife, Theresa M. (Kiehle) Whelan, of Plymouth, Mass.; his sons, Joseph and his wife, Donna, of Lewiston and Thomas and his wife, Christine, of Sanford; and his daughters, Cheryl Maddock and her husband, Dennis, of Plymouth, Mass., and Kathleen Pirc and her husband, Dale, of El Paso, Texas. He also leaves his brothers, John “Jack” of Charlestown, Mass., and Dan of Stoneham, Mass.; and his sister, Mary; in addition to his six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
