The local markets seem to be well supplied with seasonable goods. One merchant said Thursday he was paying 23 cents for eggs, 24 cents for dairy butter, 90 cents for potatoes and 21 cents for poultry. He was selling strawberries for 15 cents a box, cucumbers for 7 cents each and lettuce for 12 cents a head. Beef has kept up in spite of the hot wave, the prices being fully up to last week’s.

More than 33,000 postage stamps commemorating the memory of the late President John F. Kennedy were sold at post offices in the Twin Cities Friday, on the first day of the issue of the stamps. Such commemorative stamps usually are sold on the first day of issue in only one community — the city of issue. But the Kennedy stamps went on sale Friday throughout the nation on what would have been the 47th birthday of the assassinated chief executive. Lewiston Postmaster Roger Albert said Friday night that 18,500 of the Kennedy stamps were sold at the Lewiston Post Office on Friday, and Auburn Postmaster Donald C. Gautier said approximately 15,000 of the new commemorative stamps were sold at the Auburn Post Office.

Production of a service directory listing farmers and other sellers of feed and mulch hay is planned for the late summer. The 1989 hay directory is targeted for the Franklin, Oxford, Androscoggin, and Sagadahoc county areas and will include the name, address and telephone number of the seller. Information about the type of hay, approximate dates cut and average bale weight will also be included. Pricing of the hay will be a matter between buyer and seller. This project will be funded by the Androscoggin and Sandy River Valleys Agricultural Viability Project in cooperation with the Soil and Water Conservation Districts from Franklin, Oxford and the Andy Valley Region.
