HOWLAND — A state trooper wounded a Howland man in what police described as an armed confrontation at his Water Street home late Friday, state police said.
Dale Saucier, 36, of Howland underwent emergency surgery at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after the incident, Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said. A nursing supervisor at EMMc said Saucier was in serious condition at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Trooper Benjamin Campbell was placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an investigation being conducted by the Maine attorney general’s office, as is standard procedure.
Campbell went to the mobile home after Saucier called police shortly before midnight. His cruiser was parked near the residence, close to Penobscot Valley High School.
Several troopers and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department deputies were at the scene about 2 a.m. They referred comment to the AG’s office, which typically investigates shootings in which police officers participate.
The investigators interviewed three or four witnesses in the common yard shared by homes in the neighborhood.
