1934 – 2014

PARIS — Joan Mary (Sarrasin) Flint, of 82 Crockett Ridge Road in Norway, passed away Thursday morning, June 12, at Market Square Health Care Center.

Joan was born on July 2, 1934, in Weymouth, Mass. Joan grew up in Portsmouth, N.H., graduated from Portsmouth High School and went on to Mount Ida College and then to the University of New Hampshire. She met her husband, George, at UNH and they were married for over 60 years.

Almost 40 years were spent living in southern New Jersey, as George was employed as an engineer for RCA. After raising two boys, Joan worked at a local bank for over 10 years. After retirement, Joan and George moved back to New England and settled in Norway.

There were many family roots in the Oxford/Norway area, including her mother and many special cousins; they lived in Norway for over 20 years. Joan loved animals and over the years many stray cats ended up calling their house a home. She also had multiple dogs and she loved feeding the birds … well, let’s just say many squirrels ended the day quite happy, also.

Joan was an avid reader and she especially loved mysteries! It was quite common for her to turn the final page on multiple books every week! Joan loved antiques, yard sales, working in the yard, taking her dog(s) for a walk down “lane 6” and going out to lunch with her girlfriends.

She often told us she wasn’t sure which she loved the most — the ocean or the mountains. At times, she missed her friends in New Jersey, but Joan loved Maine and the changing seasons. However, it seemed each year she openly expressed how summer might be a month or so longer!

Joan battled ovarian cancer for over four years. She went through surgery and chemo … and then more chemo, after the cancer returned. Through it all, Joan always wore a smile. She was always filled with strength and love, and cared more about her family and others, before she ever considered herself. Her unselfishness was angelic. She will always be remembered for her positive outlook on life, no matter how difficult the challenges.

Joan is survived by two sons, a daughter-in-law and four grandchildren: Chris and his wife, Lori, live in Rye, N.H., along with their daughter, Kellsie, and their son, Christopher; and Eric lives in southern New Jersey along with his daughter, Emily, and his son, Ethan. Joan was a very special wife, mother and grandmother. Joan cherished every moment she spent with her grandchildren.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, George, in March of this year.

A very special, warm thank-you goes out to all who touched Joan’s life during her battle with cancer. The chemo nurses, hospice nurses and caregivers, and the folks at Market Square all were beyond wonderful in the final months of her life. Special neighbors, friends and cousins were all a godsend to both Joan and her family.
