It is town meeting season in Western Maine. To me, town meetings are the purest and most accessible form of democracy. Everyone can be heard and participate in a town’s decisions for the next year. Reports are made, questions are asked and answered and often, at the Norway town meeting, hard workers are warmly complimented by other townsfolk.

I noted the absence of Rep. Tom Winsor at the Norway (his home town) meeting. Candidate Dennise Whitley was there, taking an active interest. She has attended the town meetings of every town she hopes to represent in the Legislature: Sweden, Waterford, West Paris and Norway.

I expect the person voters elect to take an active interest in the town. It was surprising and revealing to realize that Rep. Winsor skipped the town meeting.

I’ll be voting for Dennise Whitley.
