Rene Bilodeau starts the Marshall’s Pop Corn stand at the Valley View Farm in Auburn on Tuesday. Bilodeau was given the task of getting the 1930 Model A Ford on the road after the historic city icon sat for years in city storage. “I said no problem as long as the engine ain’t stuck,” said the long-time resident of Sopers Mill Road. “The motor was not stuck, so it was an easy fix.” Bilodeau has been working on Ford Model As since he was a 12-year-old boy helping his dad repair a homemade tractor that was built from a Model A. Bilodeau rebuilt the popcorn cart’s carburetor, cleaned out the choke and greased the front end. “She purrs like a kitten,” Bilodeau said. Arthur F. Marshall sold fresh, hot popcorn and peanuts from the old Ford in front of the Androscoggin County Courthouse until he died in 1971. The cart was donated to the city and used during parades, but has not hit the road in at least 10 years, said Auburn City Councilor Leroy Walker. Members of the United New Auburn Association will continue to restore the Model A inside a garage behind Rolly’s Diner. Walker said they hope to have popcorn popping from the back by Aug. 13 for a New Auburn kickoff to the Great Falls Balloon Festival. A pig roast, yard sale and bottle drive will be held on Aug. 23 to raise funds to help restore the Marshall’s Pop Corn stand.
