They don’t have to deal with snow, rain nor gloom of night, but this week postal carriers in Lewiston like Jean LeBrun are living up to the fourth element of their unofficial creed: heat. Five years as a postal carrier isn’t the only thing that has toughened LeBrun. “A tour of Vietnam helped, too. Fourteen months in the jungle — this is easy,” he said. LeBrun took the heat in stride as he delivered mail to Webster Street homes and other addresses on his seven-mile walk. LeBrun said Gatorade is the best thirst quencher. He brings a bottle of it with him on his route, which he starts at about 9:30 a.m. He said heat isn’t a postal carrier’s biggest menace. instead, it’s the combination of wind and rain that bothers him. “When the ink starts to run on the envelope, then you’re in trouble,” he said.
