LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women, a day drop-in center for women, has announced its schedule of programs for August.

Sunflower craft sessions are scheduled twice this month, on Aug. 5 and 19 at 10 a.m. These crafts will be sold at the center’s table at the farmer’s market on Sunday, Aug. 24. Wisdom Boxes, Gratitude Beads and the center’s special sunflower cookies will also be for sale.

A book club is forming and for its first book will read “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou. The group will meet on Monday afternoons at 12:30 on Aug. 11, 18 and 23 with Ann Auer leading discussions. The book is the story of a remarkable woman who went from poverty, to being a world famous author and poet. She died recently. In this autobiography, Angelou tells the story of her early life that included abuse, loneliness, loss of parents and other traumas. In the end it is a story of triumph. The center has three copies available and it can be borrowed from the local libraries.

For those who like to cook, the center’s “What’s Cooking?” class will gather with Nancy at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12. This group creates unusual dishes together then enjoys the results. The center is now also taking registrations for the next “Cooking Matters” series, led by Paul Drowns from the Nutrition Center of Maine. The class will begin in September.

The monthly Bingo will be at 10 a.m. on Aug. 26. The Art Van visits the center at 10 a.m. on the 27th followed by the August birthday party at 12:30. The monthly clothing giveaway is set for the 28th, also at 10. Learn how to draw Zentagles any time during the day on the 14th and play with making and using sock puppets on the 21st.

The weekly Writing Workshop with Pat Gardiner continues each Monday morning at 10:15 with the addition of a Singing Circle time the half hour before. The monthly Playing with Poetry class offered by Kathryn Tracy is scheduled for 12:30 on the 19th. This group time includes gently experiencing poems through both reading and writing.

Support for family caregivers is available on Tuesdays at 11:30 and a weekly Al-Anon group, the only one in Lewiston, meets on Wednesdays at 5:30. The BLT group for Bisexual, Lesbian and Transgendered women and their friends or family meets on the last Thursday each month, this time being the 28th at 3 p.m.

The center’s summer hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, closed Fridays.

For a full calendar of events, see www.wisdomswomen.org. All women are welcome, programs are offered free of charge and no appointments are needed. Oatmeal breakfasts are available daily and the center has a shower available for use.

The center is continually in need of donations of hygiene items which they give away. Current need is for full-size, unopened, basic items such as shampoo and conditioner, tampons, deodorant and toothpaste. Unopened smaller sample sizes will also currently be accepted to be used for outreach packs. The center has requests from up to 50 individual women each month. The regular contribution of these supplies is thus very much appreciated.

If you have questions, or are interested in volunteering, contact the executive director, Klara Tammany, at 513-3922. Donations can be written to Trinity Church/Wisdom and sent to The Center for Wisdom’s Women at PO Box 1016, Lewiston 04243.
