BETHEL — The Bethel Family Health Center is celebrating National Health Center Week by hosting a food drive Aug. 11 to 22 for the Bethel Food Pantry, front office coordinator Kathryn Perry-Abbott said Thursday.

Perry-Abbott said this is the first year the center has hosted a food drive for the local food pantry, and they are expecting “a really good turnout.”

The center is at 32 Railroad St.

“The food drive is part of the Community Health Center Week that takes place across the country, and while figuring out what exactly we wanted to do, we agreed that we wanted to do something specifically for the food pantry,” Perry-Abbott said. “We contacted the people there, and they agreed. They were very grateful.”

Perry-Abbott said the pantry staff advised they need a lot of non-perishables and high protein items such as peanut butter, canned meat and tuna.

“We’ll also take cash donations if people wish to do that instead,” Perry-Abbott said. “People can bring their donations right into the Family Health Center.”

There will also be a summer safety table set up in the waiting area of the health center with information on skin care and safety, she said.

If all goes well with the food drive, it may be an annual event, Perry-Abbott said.
