After many discussions with voters, I have come to the conclusion that most people believe the November election is only about welfare in Maine. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This election is about bringing good-paying jobs to Maine; not welfare.

This election is about taking care of the elderly in Maine; not welfare.

This election is about being a right-to-work state; not welfare.

This election is about providing a good education to the young; not welfare.

This election is about ensuring the state pays the 55 percent to schools as mandated by law; not welfare.

This election is about raising the minimum wage so that many people in Maine can earn a livable wage; not welfare.

This election is about women’s health; not welfare.

This election is about bringing civility and real leadership back to Augusta; not welfare.

This election is about Maine reducing its use of fossil fuels through increasing renewable power generation; not welfare.

The reality is that people on welfare are not the cause of most of the problems facing Mainers today. Actually, if we were to look carefully, we would find that there are far more important issues facing Maine that have a more direct impact on us than welfare.

It doesn’t matter who someone supports in the election. What matters is the fact that there are so many issues, other than welfare, that voters should be looking at to help guide them as they elect the next governor.
