MANCHESTER, N.H. — Rookie Henrik Samuelsson continued his hot preseason for the Portland Pirates on Sunday, netting a goal and adding an assist in a 2-1 Portland win over the Manchester Monarchs at Sullivan Arena on the campus of St. Anselm College.
The win gave Portland a sweep of the two-game preseason series between the teams, the only two preseason games the Pirates will play.
They open the regular season Saturday at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland against the Providence Bruins.
On Sunday, Samuelsson opened the scoring at the 9-minute mark of the first period after Tobias Rieder broke down the left wing and fed the puck to Jordan Martinook near the left side of the goal. He settled it down and slipped it off Manchester starting goalie Patrik Bartosak to a waiting Samuelsson on the doorstep.
After a scoreless second period, Rieder doubled the Pirates’ lead early in the third period while Portland had an extra skater due to a delayed Monarchs penalty. He wristed the puck toward the slot from the right faceoff dot, where it glanced off a Manchester defenseman and past Monarchs back-up goalie Yann Danis and into the net for Rieder’s first goal of the preseason. Evan Oberg picked up the primary assist while Samuelsson picked up the other.
Andrew Crescenzi scored the Monarchs’ lone goal at 5:14 of the third period on a tip in front to spoil Louis Domingue’s shutout bid.
Domingue made 26 saves in his only preseason start. Danis took the loss after stopping seven of eight shots he faced. Bartosak made 15 saves on 16 shots.
Samuelsson ended the preseason as Portland’s leading scorer, notching two goals and two assists for four points.

AUBURN — Katy Cyr and Danielle McCusker scored two goals each to lead Southern Maine Community College to a 9-0 win over Central Maine Community College on Sunday.
Shannon Blanchard, Sydney Choate, Tori Cormier, Anadia Higgins and Marina West also scored for the Seawolves.
Bayley Caouette and Breanna Cox led a stout defensive effort in front of keeper Jasmine Hatch (10 saves) for the Mustangs, while Cassie Regner, Kayla Angelico and Rebecca Wolinski led the CMCC offense, with Angelico registering three of the team’s seven shots.
