ORONO – Town officials are continuing to work on an opportunity to bring ultra-high speed internet access to the Maine Technology Park off Godfrey Drive.
The town was approached with an opportunity to partner with Maine Fiber, the University of Maine, and EMHS to bring open access fiber lines to the park. Such lines have been identified as a goal of the town.
Under a proposed agreement between the town and Maine Fiber, underground fiber would be installed along Godfrey Drive from Bennoch Road and ending near Nexxlinx, which would provide access to all buildable lots in the park and make them more attractive to potential tenants.
A final agreement on the installation is still being worked out, but at this point, it has been estimated the town’s cost would be $37,000. In return for that investment, the town would own more than half of the fiber installed.
