On the back of Lewiston’s ballot is Question 2, to make marijuana legal for adults 21 and over.
I am proud to vote “yes” on Question 2 and I hope it passes. There is no reason for adults to be treated like criminals for using marijuana. Prohibition does not work; the nation learned that 80 years ago during alcohol prohibition. Compared to alcohol, marijuana is safer in nearly every way — less addictive and less toxic.
The truth is, adults use marijuana for the same reasons adults drink alcohol — to socialize with friends or relax after a long day of work.
Adults can responsibly use marijuana and alcohol, and using either substance does not make someone a bad person. Punishing adults who choose to use the safer substance is the wrong approach.
I will be voting “yes” on Lewiston’s local Question 2.
