Federation of the Blind conference

AUBURN — The National Federation of the Blind of Maine will hold its annual conference on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1  at the Hilton Garden Inn, 14 Great Falls Plaza.

This is the second time in the year the group will meet face to face, instead of using telephone conferences.

The group will get together on Friday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 10 p.m. for a pool party and get-together. Food can be bought from the restaurant at the inn.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, NFB-ME will hold the conference from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The theme this year is “empowerment in adversity.” Registration will be from 8 to 9 a.m. The cost is $35, which includes coffee and pastry in the morning and pizza buffet lunch.

Joe Ruffalo from the national NFB will be the main guest speaker and there will be many other demonstrators and speakers.

Table exhibitor space is still available at the cost of $30.

Work in Congo is library topic

BRUNSWICK — Alexander Petroff of Brunswick, founder in 2005 of Working Villages International, will speak at the Curtis Library at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6.

PeaceWorks is pleased to host this presentation showing the ways in which Petroff’s project is building peace and sustainable agriculture in the Ruzizi Valley area of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Now in its ninth year, the project is a social and economic model of serious importance for all parts of the world.

Working Villages International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to getting rural people out of poverty. WVI’s efforts in irrigation and sustainable agriculture have had a transformative effect on the war-torn region. This event is free and open to the public.
