1943 – 2014

MEXICO — Mary E. Smith, 71, of Roxbury Road in Mexico, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at her residence following a long illness, with her loving husband by her side.

She was born in Bowdoin on May 8, 1943, a daughter of Lendall and Lillian (Palmer) Bickford. Mary was educated in Wilton and Mexico schools. She married Clarence D. Smith on Aug. 8, 1959, and they celebrated 55 years of marriage. She had been employed at Bennett’s Shoe Shop, Dick’s Restaurant and Jim’s Carpet Barn.

Mary loved making handmade quilts for her family and friends, and she also enjoyed doing cross-stitch. Mary also loved to cook and make homemade gingerbread men for her grandchildren.

She will be sadly missed by her little dog, Annie.

Surviving are her husband, Clarence D. Smith, of Mexico; two sons, Timothy Smith and wife, Carol, of Mexico and Joey Smith of Mexico; a sister, Brenda Diconzo and husband, Dennis, of Rumford; two brothers, John Bickford and wife, Brenda, of Industry and Fred Bickford and wife, Gail, of Georgia; four grandchildren, Joshua Smith and wife, Mary, Janelle Smith, Jamie Smith and Cody Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; a brother, Kingston Bickford; a sister-in-law, Linda Bickford; and stepsister, Virginia Buck.
