Congratulations to Eric Brakey on his election to the Maine Senate, representing Auburn, New Gloucester, Poland, Minot and Mechanic Falls.

As a retired elementary school teacher, I always told my kids there is no substitute for hard work. Despite an age of shortcuts and gimmicks, the new state senator has proven true the age-old adage.

Senator-elect Brakey joins Olympia Snowe as the only two Republican challengers to ever win a majority of votes in the city of Auburn, as she did in her 1976 race. The only other Republican to win a majority of the votes in Auburn was Peter Whitmore as an incumbent in 1988 (the year Brakey was born).

Knowing that Brakey knocked on nearly 8,000 doors, listening to and hearing the needs of his constituents during the campaign, makes me so proud of his hard work.

Once again, congratulations to the people of Auburn, New Gloucester, Poland, Minot and Mechanic Falls for being represented by not only the youngest senator in Maine, but also the hardest-working.

Melody Driscoll, Auburn
