AUBURN — Carrington Miller recorded his third double-double of the year Sunday, and the Central Maine Community College men’s basketball team remained undefeated in Yankee Conference play with a 102-99 overtime win over Vermont Technical College at Kirk Hall.

CM (7-3, 3-0) jumped out early, holding a double-digit lead throughout most of the first half en route to a 53-44 halftime edge.

Five different Mustangs hit for double figures. Miller led all scorers with 28 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Jeremy Suero and Preston Isner with 19 points apiece. Breyon Graves added 13 points and Xavier Colbert chipped in 10.

Colbert and Isner also played well on the defensive end, holding Vermont Tech’s Jamal Hughes, one of the league’s most explosive players, to 30 points. Kazre Cummings collected 11 defensive boards and added 8 assists.

CM hosts the Auburn Police All-Stars in a charity game Tuesday (7 p.m.), and rival New Hampshire Tech visits Thursday (8 p.m.)

Virginia-Lynchburg 71, UMF 63

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The University of Maine at Farmington men’s basketball team (0-2, 0-0) let a half time slip away as the Beavers fell, 71-63, to Virginia-Lynchburg in the Guilford Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

The game was back and forth until 11 minutes left in the opening half. With the Beavers holding a one-point lead, UMF exploded with a 23-5 run to close out the half. Senior captains Pet Sumner and Uriah Forest-Bulley led with Beavers with eight points apiece in the opening frame.

UMF held a 38-19 advantage at halftime. The Beavers shot 11-of-27 from the floor, 4-of-9 from behind the arc, and 12-of-15 from the free throw line. The Beavers defense held Va.-Lynchburg to 6-of-24 shooting from the floor in the first half.

When the second half began, Forest-Bulley scored UMF’s first four points to give the Beavers a 42-19 lead. After a made three-pointer by Va.-Lynchburg, Pet Sumner answered back by hitting all three free throws after getting fouled on a three-point attempt.

Va.-Lynchburg got back in the game with 14 unanswered points, and dwindling the UMF lead to 47-36, with 13:29 left in the game. After six quick points by the Beavers, Lynchburg continued its pursuit to get back in the game, by constructing a 15-4 run to even the score at 54-54 with 6:37 remaining.

VAL did not take its foot off the gas pedal as Lynchburg continued to ride the momentum and did not look back. VAL’s Traxonte Sawyer hit a clutch three-pointer to give Lynchburg the lead, which quickly increased to seven as the Beavers had to resort to fouling in the final minutes.

Va-Lynchburg secured the win by hitting 7-of-9 from the line in the final 1:14 of regulation. The Beavers finished the game hitting 19-of-57 while their counterparts, Va.-Lynchburg, finished 23-of-55 shooting.

Sumner led the Beavers with 15 points on 3-of-10 from the field, but 7-for-7 on free throws. Forest-Bulley added 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting and seven rebounds. Lychburg’s Adrian Saunders and Traxonte Sawyers scored a game high 16 points.

Women’s basketball

Castleton 58, Bates 55

CASTLETON, Vt. — Castleton saw its double-digit advantage evaporate in the second half but never lost the lead, and the Spartans got a game-saving block from Meghan O’Sullivan in the final second to secure a 58-55 win over the Bates women’s basketball team in the Rutland Herald Tip-Off Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore forward Bernadette Connors led the Bobcats with a career-high 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting with four 3-pointers. She also added a career-high 12 rebounds in earning a spot on the all-tournament team.

Sophomore Allie Coppola added 11 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Senior Molly Brown was in double figures with 15 points on 3-for-18 shooting from the floor.

The Bobcats trailed 58-55 with nine seconds left as Bryanna DuPont stepped to the line for the first shot of a one-and-one. She missed the free throw and Bates raced the ball up the court.

Bates swung it around the perimeter looking for an open shot before senior Kristin Calvo was forced to hoist a 3-pointer from the top of the arc with time running out. O’Sullivan read the play and leaped at the attempt, getting a few fingers on the ball as it fell short of the basket.

The Spartans held the Bobcats to 28.1 percent shooting for the game and without a field goal over the final 5:10. Castleton finished at just 39 percent shooting for the game after making 5 of 25 attempts in the second half. The Spartans did outrebound Bates 48-41 as they improved to 2-0. The Bobcats (1-1) forced 15 Castleton turnovers, which turned into 14 points.

Maine 65, LIU-Brooklyn 59

BANGOR — Sigi Koizar scored eight of her career-high 22 points in overtime as the University of Maine women’s basketball team outlasted visiting LIU-Brooklyn 65-59 in overtime Sunday afternoon.

The Black Bears found their mark at the free throw line in OT, going 9-for-13 from the stripe in extra time to clinch the victory.

Maine featured three scorers who tallied double-figures, led by Koizar’s career night. Maine’s sophomore point guard went 6-for-13 from the floor while adding 10 points from the free throw line in 44-minutes of play. Liz Wood totaled 14 points, her seventh straight-game in double digits, to go along with a game-high six steals. Sophie Weckstrom was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, chipping 13 points off the bench.

Neither team led by more than six points throughout the contest, which featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes.

CMCC 90, Vermont Tech 60

AUBURN — Central Maine Community College utilized its depth, placing five players in double figures in an easy 90-60 women’s basketball win Sunday over Vermont Tech.

The game was back and forth for the first 10 minutes before the full court pressure of the Mustangs took its toll on the Knights. CM went into the half up 44-24.

Gabby Foy led CM with 18 points, 8 steals and 6 assists. Laura Soohey tallied 15 points and a team-high 9 boards. Freshman Ella Montminy scored 10 points, ripped down 7 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists.

Macy Welch and Kat Styles came off the bench to record 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Kaitlin Lyford paced Vermont Tech with 24 points, including six 3-pointers. The Mustangs forced 44 turnovers.

RPI 65, UMF 50

GORHAM — Lindsay Ranquist scored a team-high 13 points for the University of Maine at Farmington in Sunday’s 65-50 loss to Rensselaer in the consolation game of the USM Tip-Off Classic.

RPI jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the opening three minutes and increased the margin to 20 early in the second half. The Beavers (0-2) scored nine unanswered points but couldn’t get any closer.

Elizabeth Ferry added seven points and nabbed a game-high nine rebounds for UMF. Rensselaer’s Ashley Clough scored a game-high 22 points on 11-of-18 from the floor.
