After exhibiting Quest Civil War projects at their school, Mountain Valley Middle School students traveled to the Rumford Public Library on Nov. 19 where they split into three groups and were joined by military veterans to read and discuss the book Soldier’s Heart. The veterans included teacher Dan Hodge, teacher Anthony Mazza, and Sheriff Wayne Gallant and Capt. Chris Wainwright of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.
The session at the Rumford Public Library was part of the students’ studies of the Civil War and part of the Local and Legendary project and Maine Memory Network. It was funded by a $2,000 grant from the Maine Humanities Council.
Students brought models they built of significant Civil War battlefields.
