LIVERMORE FALLS — Police from four agencies searched for an 89-year-old man reported missing early Wednesday and found him safe at a residence he owns in Jay at 8:38 a.m.

The man, who lives with a guardian in East Livermore village, had gone to bed at the same time as a guardian’s family member early Tuesday evening, Livermore Falls police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said Wednesday.

When the female guardian came home later, it appeared the man was sleeping. When she checked on him at about 1 a.m. she found he stuffed something under the covers to make it look like he was in bed, the chief said.

The man was distraught because his license was taken away by a court on Tuesday, Steward said.

The guardian reported him missing at about 1:30 a.m. The last time he was seen was about 7 p.m., he said.

Livermore Falls police Lt. Joseph Sage searched for him in Livermore Falls and sent out a missing person alert. Hospitals were also called to see if he was there.

Androscoggin County Sheriff Detective Maurice Drouin and Jay police officer Russell Adams checked residences the man owns in Livermore and Jay but to no avail, Steward said.

The Maine Warden Service was also alerted.

Franklin County Cpl. Christopher Chase and his police dog, Abbie, attempted to track the man but were unsuccessful.

Livermore Falls Sgt. Vern Stevens, officer Steve Allen and Steward were getting information out to the public and alerting a missing persons center Wednesday morning when Stevens received a call that Jay police Chief Richard Caton IV and officer Nicholas Gulliver found the elderly man at the home he owns in Jay.

Someone had given him a ride to his home after police checked it the first time, Steward said.
