AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage is calling on Maine residents to donate to the Salvation Army’s annual red kettle campaign.
The Republican governor helped officially kick off the effort at the Maine State House on Thursday.
James LaBossiere, commander of the organization’s Northern New England Division, said this year’s drive has gotten off to a slow start, but the group hopes to raise at least $734,000 in Maine.
He says the funds will be used primarily to help people struggling during Christmas time, but the organization hopes it will also allow them to provide money for food, shelter and utilities into the new year.
LePage, who put a few dollars in the kettle on Thursday, is encouraging everyone to volunteer their time to ring the bell to help the campaign this winter.
