NEWRY — Residents seeking municipal offices can take out papers for the election in March, Administrator Loretta Powers said Wednesday morning.

Up for grabs are one three-year Board of Selectmen seat, Assessor & Overseer of the Poor seat, and two School Administrative District 44 School Board director seats, one for a two-year term and the other for the remaining one-year term.

Incumbent Selectman Brooks Morton has taken out papers, as has former Selectman Jim Largess for the same seat. Newry School Board incumbent directors Bonnie Largess and Whitney Gray took out papers for the two-year term, Powers said. No one had taken out papers for the one-year term as of Wednesday morning.

Not less than 10, nor more than 25 signatures of registered Newry voters are required to file nomination papers at the Town Clerk’s office. The deadline for completed nomination papers to be returned is Jan. 16. The secret-ballot election will be held on March 2, while the town meeting will be held on March 3.

In other municipal news, Powers said Newry now has a “nice” Cemetery Committee, which will meet at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, in the Town Office.

The Town Office will close at noon on Dec. 24 and be closed on Christmas Day.

At Monday night’s selectmen meeting, a resident asked if they requested to rent the Bear River Grange Hall on behalf of a nonresident, to use for dance classes, for the resident fee of $75. Selectmen denied the request, Powers said.

Because of the cold weather this month, attic vent installation at the Grange Hall was postponed until spring.

The board also chose not to send a letter they had the code enforcement officer draft from a previous meeting to a resident about whose property another resident complained had a lot of clutter. Selectmen ruled that no ordinances were violated.
