DIXFIELD — Continued discussions on cemetery lot prices and the possibility of merging the Dixfield, Mexico and Rumford police departments are on the agenda for selectmen Monday, Dec. 22.
The meeting is 5:30 p.m. at the Ludden Memorial Library.
The Board of Selectmen has been discussing raising the price of cemetery lots since Nov. 11, when Town Manager Carlo Puiia asked sexton Todd Piper to compare Dixfield’s prices to surrounding towns. Puiia said the town charges $200 per lot, which is lower than surrounding towns.
Puiia said that he will also talk with selectmen Monday about researching a possible merger with the Rumford and Mexico police departments.
Rumford and Mexico also are investigating whether to merge police departments.
During a Nov. 24 joint meeting between the Rumford, Mexico and Dixfield selectmen to discuss the possibility of merging police departments, Rumford and Mexico asked Dixfield police Chief Richard Pickett to create a draft budget proposal for all three towns to merge.
However, during Dixfield’s Dec. 8 board meeting, selectmen voted 3-1 to organize a committee to search for a new chief of police because Pickett is leaving in late January.
“The town of Dixfield is obligated to have a five-man police department until January 2016, due to a grant we received,” Puiia said Friday. “The committee is in the process of looking for a new police chief in the short term. However, I think it behooves the town to continue researching the possibility of merging with other police departments in the area, even if it’s somewhere down the line.”
