SKOWHEGAN (AP) — A Canaan man is facing charges after cashing stolen checks to the tune of about $12,000.

Matthew Reilly is charged with forging business checks from Kennebec Metals recycling in Skowhegan and cashing them at stores in Athens, Anson, Clinton and Augusta, as well as the Skowhegan Walmart and Bangor Savings Bank.

He was held on $2,500 cash bail on Wednesday.

It was unclear how Reilly got the business checks or whether he is a former employee of the company.

The thefts are alleged to have begun Dec. 30.
