Miriam, 36

Congenital heart defect

Mariam suffers from Atrial Septal Defect, a hole between the chambers of her heart. After collapsing at an event and later in the car, Mariam went to see her doctor who detected an irregular heartbeat. Eventually, an ultrasound would detect a silver dollar sized hole in her heart that caused it to swell to three times its size. Mariam attributes research funded by the American Heart Association as what saved her life.
