LEWISTON — Federal safety officials are continuing to investigate two incidents where workers fell through roof skylights in Auburn this winter.
Karen Billups, assistant area director for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said the investigations likely will take weeks to complete.
She said her agency has received no other similar reports of workers falling through roof skylights this winter.
George Beam, 43, of Biddeford, had been on the roof of the Auburn Mall one afternoon last month to repair the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system when he plunged through a Plexiglas skylight more than 20 feet and landed on a concrete floor. He had been listed in critical condition at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Earlier this week, a spokeswoman said he was no longer listed as a patient there.
Beam was an employee of Atlantic Comfort Systems Inc. of Biddeford. Office Manager Lynn McKeller said Friday that Beam was “doing well” in his recovery at New England Rehabilitation Hospital in Portland. He is expected to return home over the weekend, McKeller said. Donations to a recovery fund can be made at www.gofundme.com/george-beam.
McKeller declined to comment about whether any company policies had changed as a result of the accident.
James Dugay, 48, fell through a skylight roof earlier this month at Hartt Transportation on Hotel Road in Auburn onto a pile of boxes before landing on the floor. A local fire official said Dugay was conscious and didn’t show any obvious injuries. He was taken to a hospital where officials believe he was released later that day.
Efforts to get comment from company officials were unsuccessful.
