AUGUSTA (AP) — Former Augusta Mayor William Dowling is suing a former business associate for almost $900,000.

Dowling, mayor from 1999 to 2006, is suing developer Kevin Mattson and his business entities in Kennebec County Superior Court for back wages, unused vacation and sick pay, loan repayment and other costs.

Dowling was Mattson’s right-hand man until last year. Dowling’s complaint says he worked for Mattson from 2002 to 2014 generally as chief operating officer.

Dowling told the Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1bIDSnZ) he’s hoping to work out an out-of-court settlement sometime this week.

Mattson said the lawsuit is “full of allegations that are just untrue,” but calls Dowling a friend and hopes they can work out their misunderstanding “amicably, privately, and soon.”
