OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Bucks broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning with 10 runs for a 21-9 triumph over Old Orchard Beach in EWC softball action Thursday.

The Bucks (1-0) posted seven runs in the third inning for a 7-2 lead. But the Seagulls (0-1) closed the gap with four runs in the home frames of the fifth and sixth innings to trail by just two, 11-9, after six complete.

Alexis Bennett clubbed a home run for Buckfield, while teammate Abby Shields earned the pitching victory in the season opener.

Yarmouth 3, Poland 2

YARMOUTH — Catcher Grant Gilmen crossed the plate on a wild pitch for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Yarmouth notched a 3-2 victory in the season opener over Poland in WMC baseball action Thursday.

Clippers’ (1-0) relief pitcher, Luke Klad, gave up a run in the top of the sixth before smashing an RBI double to tie the game again in the bottom of the frame.

Ethan Caillier came on in relief for Ben Bernier in the seventh inning for the Knights (0-1), and had the misfortune of giving up the winning run on a wild pitch.

College baseball

UMaine-Farmington, Lyndon State split

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. — The University of Maine at Farmington split a doubleheader with Lyndon State Thursday afternoon, taking Game 1 10-5 and dropping the twin bill 1-0, at Skip Pound Field.

The Hornets took a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the first inning of Game 1. But the Beavers bounced back with five runs in the second inning.

A pair of two-run doubles clinched the deal for the Beavers. Jordan Croteau of South Paris lifted a double in the fourth and Tom Grady drove in two in the fifth.

Nate Pushard of Auburn started on the hill for the Beavers and pitched four solid innings. The freshman struck out two and gave up three runs on four hits.

Lyndon State produced the only run of Game 2 in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double.

Women’s lacrosse 

UMaine-Farmington 13, New England College 10

FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington held off a late surge by New England College for a 13-10 victory in NAC women’s lacrosse action Thursday afternoon at Prescott Field.

After surrendering an early goal with a one-man advantage, the Beavers (5-6) closed out the half on a 6-2 run with two goals from Rhi Jackson and three from Ayla Allen of Rumford.

The Pilgrims slowly cut into the Beavers’ 10-3 lead in the second half. But, Carly Raymond added her second goal and Allen tallied her fifth and sixth to secure the win for Farmington.

Patty Smith stopped five shots on the afternoon and Allen led the Beavers with seven ground balls.
