PARIS — An Oxford man has been indicted on charges he had sex with a woman with learning disabilities twice in the past five years.

An Oxford County grand jury Friday indicted Marshall W. Francis, 65, on two counts of gross sexual assault.

According to the indictment, Francis had sexual contact with the woman Jan. 7, and she submitted due to compulsion. It also alleges that in 2010 Francis engaged in a sex act with the woman when she was younger than 18.

According to an affidavit by Oxford Police Department Sgt. Alan Coffin, the woman said she had been raped by Francis on multiple occasions over the past several years. During an interview at the police station, Francis denied the accusations.

He has no prior criminal history. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 40 years in prison on both charges.

Francis transported students at Elm Street School in Mechanic Falls and was placed on administrative leave after his arrest in January. He resigned April 2, according to Regional School Unit 16 Superintendent Tina Meserve.

Meserve said previously that the charges do not appear to involve an RSU student.
