RUMFORD — American Legion Unit 24 will conduct elections at the Sunday, May 3, meeting.

The Post has focused on the children and youth in April, coordinating a project that will provide backpacks for young people at the local shelter. School supplies, new clothing, personal hygiene items, comfort items and cash donations are requested. As backpacks are filled, they will be dropped off at the Safe Voices office in Rumford to be delivered to a 17-bed communal center that provides temporary emergency shelter and support services to women and children.

At the meeting, the Post had a “Military Child’s Table,” which is similar to the “Missing Man” table. Each item on the table represented the sacrifice of a soldier’s family.

The Post gave two scholarships to Mountain Valley High School seniors Corbin Arsenault and Tucker Rowland.

The Post is raising funds to send five Mountain Valley High School juniors to Maine Girls State. The Post is currently $200 short of sending all five girls. Donations may be dropped off at the American Legion Post in care of Girls State, 184 Congress St., Rumford.
