Black Bear Aquatics, a one-year-young USA swimming club based in Orono, will host the Jr. Bears Triathlon, a youth triathlon supporting healthy and active kids, at 9 a.m. on June 13 in UMaine’s Memorial Gym. The event will be professionally timed.

The event will be for two age groups. For ages 6-9, there will be a 50 yard swim, one mile bike ride, and half mile run; for ages 10-14, there will be a 100 yard swim, 2.3 mile bike ride and one mile run. The swim portion of the triathlon is in Wallace Pool, a 25-yard, eight lane pool. There will be two participants per lane per heat.The bike course will be on both paved and dirt roads, and athletes will run on paved roads, dirt paths, as well as on the outdoor track.

In order to participate in the Jr. Bears Triathlon, you must have a bike helmet and your own bike. No personal floatation devices will be allowed in the pool.

Also, Black Bear Aquaics is seeking about 75 adult volunteers to assist with race day support. Volunteers will serve as traffic-safety controllers, transition support, race monitors, etc. Parents of race participants are strongly encourage to assist. To recognize and thank volunteers, there will be a free post-race BBQ provided by Moe’s Bangor.
