A Louisville, Ky., man today notified the Lewiston police department that his pocket was “picked” of between $350 and $400 at the Central Maine Youth Center the night of the recent Clay-Liston heavyweight fight. John E. Tarrant, in a letter to Police Chief Joseph H. Farrand, said he was bumped by a “hard looking young lady” as he entered the Arena the night of the fight, May 25. He said he knew he had the money in a gold money clip valued at about $25, because he remembered putting it into his pocket. According to Tarrant, he was not reporting the matter because the money might be found, but because of insurance purposes. Several other people have reported to police that they had been accosted by pickpockets during the fight, and a group of alleged “dips” was arrested a few days later at Philadelphia. They were believed to have been in Lewiston at the time of the fight.
