The tri-county area will be buzzing with Maine State Golf Association tournament scheduling this season.

Fox Ridge, Spring Meadows and Fairlawn already have been the sites of the weekend (Friday and Saturday) tournaments. Upcoming are weekend play Sept. 4-5 at Norway and Oct 30-31 at Martindale. These weekend tournaments are extremely popular among MSGA golfers, because the retired players can compete on Friday and the working players get to play on Saturdays.

Then there are the MSGA championship events which began with a Club Team tournament May 31 at Belgrade Lakes. The Senior Team Championship scheduled the next day, however, was postponed by rain with the new date being July 23. They continue with a Senior Four-Ball Tuesday at Poland Spring. A State Amateur qualifier will be held at Fox Ridge June 23. Aug. 11-13 the MSGA Match Play will be at Martindale and Sept. 1-2 the MSGA Four-Ball will be at Fox Ridge.

On the 15-event MSGA Senior Tour, will be dates at Martindale Aug. 17 and at Fairlawn Sept. 8.

The Maine State Collegiate championships, overseen by the MSGA, will be Sept. 19-20 at Fairlawn.

This tells you about tri-county area tournaments sponsored by the MSGA, which is known throughout the United States as being the largest per-capita schedule in the nation, and second in total tournaments for 2015. Other tournaments that fans like to attend include the Charlie’s Open, which is the Maine State Open championship, consisting of players from throughout New England. With a July 26 pro-am, the Open will be July 27-28 and held up the road once again at the Augusta Country Club. The Maine Amateur is July 7-9 at Waterville and the Maine Mid-Amateur is Sept. 12-13 at Val Halla.

On the national golf scene, a U.S. Amateur qualifier is scheduled July 14 at The Ledges.

So, we have some significant golf activity on tap this season in the tri-county area and throughout Maine.

The second annual Girls’ Golf Fair will be 1-3 p.m. June 28 at Riverside South, rain or shine. The event features golf activities, crafts, music, fun contests, prizes, and snacks along with information on junior golf programs for girls, during a program sponsored by First Tee of Maine, the Women’s Maine State Golf Association and the Southern Maine Women’s Golf Association.

The Maine State Golf Association is conducting two championship events this week. The aforementioned Senior Four-Ball (formerly two-ball) will be Tuesday at Poland Spring with a Maine Amateur qualifier scheduled Thursday at Biddeford-Saco. The traditional weekend tournament Friday and Saturday will be at Val Halla.
