For the past 31 years, the Lung Association’s Trek Across Maine has drawn in hundreds (and now, thousands) of cyclists to ride 180 miles over three days from Bethel to Belfast. This year over 2,000 riders and more than 600 volunteers will work together to support the American Lung Association of the Northeast’s research, education, and advocacy efforts to prevent lung disease and promote lung health.

No matter what the weather or riding conditions, Trekkers are upbeat, enthusiastic and looking forward to enjoying the beautiful towns and scenery across Central Maine. Bringing so many bicyclists, support vehicles, medical vehicles and police escorts through the small towns of Maine can cause traffic delays and congestion on the roads.

The Trek is always on Father’s Day weekend, which falls on June 19 through June 21 this year. It starts at Sunday River and winds its way through Rumford, Norridgewock, Farmington, Waterville and finally Belfast. Along the way, some areas experience more traffic slowdowns than others. Law enforcement officers will be positioned at all major intersections where Trek riders have to cross traffic. There will also be motorcycle officers and state police vehicles driving the Trek route to ensure the safety of motorists and Trek cyclists.

The American Lung Association is asking local drivers and residents for their support, patience, and extra care as the cyclists make their way from Sunday River through or near your town. Local drivers play a key role in making the Trek safe and fun for everyone. We appreciate the cooperation we have always received, and ask for your patience and care again this year. Please slow down and share the road with families, friends and neighbors.
