DENMARK — Two people, including a Denmark firefighter, were injured Sunday night when lightning struck twice, about 5:28 p.m. near the intersection of Route 117 and Rocky Knoll Road.

A man was sitting in a 1968 Chevy Nova in his driveway when lighting struck a utility pole and disconnected the three-phase wire, which then fell on the car. The man felt the shock from the live wire touching the metal of the old car, according to Fire Chief Dana Costello.

After firefighters got the man out of the car, he was escorted by a firefighter to his residence when lightning struck again — this time striking the house just at the moment when the firefighter touched the metal doorknob of the home’s screen door, Costello said.

Both men were taken to Bridgton Hospital where they were treated and later released, Costello said. He declined to release their names.
