SAPARS off-site support locations

JAY — Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services has announced it is providing youth and adults with one-to-one support throughout the summer at drop-in sites located in Jay, Rangeley and Phillips. During the school year, drop-in services have been available through the schools.

New meeting locations have been established so survivors of sexual violence and concerned others can access in-person support without having to travel to the Farmington office. An advocate will be available on Tuesdays in Jay, on Wednesdays in Phillips and on Thursdays in Rangeley.

SAPARS hopes to continue these drop-in services beyond the summer months and to establish additional locations in the more rural and northern parts of Franklin County.

Rangeley to host bird walk

RANGELEY — Mingo Springs Golf Course has announced a Summer Bird Walk at 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, led by nature photographer Nick Leadley of Rangeley.

Everyone is welcome to enjoy a guided two-mile exploration of the Mingo Springs Trail and Bird Walk.

Participants will want to bring along binoculars and cameras. Bird identification books are also useful. Participants should meet at the Mingo Springs Golf Course Maintenance Building.

Waterford to host autism benefit

WATERFORD — The Pulpit Rock Trail Blazah’s will host the fourth annual Allies for Autism benefit poker ride on Saturday, Aug. 8. located on Google Mountain Road.

Registration is from 8 to 10 a.m. There will be free camping on site. No ATV is required to participate. Music will be by The Road Kingz, and a cookout will be on-site.

All proceeds will benefit Pine Tree Camp.

Participants from out-of-state are not required to be registered in Maine to attend this event as long as they are registered in their home state.

Beast Feast set for Aug. 8

RUMFORD — The Beast Feast is set for noon on Saturday, Aug. 8, in the VFW parking lot on Cumberland Street. 

The menu will include barbecque beef and pork, corn on the cob, bean hole beans and salad. All proceeds are going to the Maine Veterans Home. Cost of admission is $8 per person.

Chesterville to host talk on Samuel Linscott

CHESTERVILLE — The role of the Samuel Linscott family in the town of Chesterville’s history will be the subject of a presentation by Richard Wilde at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, at the Chesterville Center Meeting House.  

In 1783 at age 27, Samuel Linscott and his friend, Dummer Sewall, Jr., 19, joined the only previous white settler, Abraham Wyman, in the southern half of Chesterville. Today the Linscott family has dispersed, but their legacy in the town of Chesterville survives, an example being the Center Union Meeting House itself, for which Linscott’s son donated the land in around 1850.

Wilde’s talk complements the 2015 Linscott reunion, which starts earlier in the day. The presentation will contain photos and other interesting items, and Wilde will be available to discuss any possible family connections with the audience. The talk is free and open to the public.
