FRYEBURG — A local man faces felony arson charges after police say he tried to burn down a vacant home last week.

Fryeburg police arrested 44-year-old Fryeburg resident Stanley Vladyka on charges of arson, burglary and aggravated criminal mischief Wednesday morning. He was transported to Oxford County Jail in Paris, where bail was set at $500.

According to Fryeburg police Chief Joshua Potvin, Vladyka allegedly broke into 55 Ice House Road on July 31 and set fire to the stairwell. The building, owned by a New Hampshire couple, is a rental residence and was under renovations. The fire was quickly suppressed, but there was damage to the ceiling and drywall, according to Potvin.

“After a five-day investigation, I’m pleased my officers were able to hold the offender accountable so quickly,” Potvin said. “I hope this arrest will bring some closure for the victims and neighbors. This incident left the homeowners feeling violated and the neighborhood unsettled.”
