LEWISTON — Saying he’d be an approachable mayor, local Realtor Steve Morgan kicked off his campaign in Dufresne Plaza on Lisbon Street on Tuesday evening.

“Governing is not easy, but it’s about choices,” Morgan said. “I don’t think you need to yell at something to make it change and that’s why I’ll be a good ambassador for the city of Lewiston. The mayor of Maine’s second-largest city needs to bring people together from different points of view and find common solutions.”

Morgan is one of five possible candidates seeking to replace Mayor Robert Macdonald.

Macdonald, Morgan, Maine People’s Alliance Communications Director Benjamin Chin and Charles Soule have all confirmed spots on the Nov. 3 ballot. Local landlord Stan Pelletier and Luke Jensen are collecting signatures to win spots on the ballot.

Morgan served as a city councilor for Lewiston’s Ward 7 in 2010 and 2011. He stepped down at the end of his term to focus on his real estate business. But the market has rebounded and he said he wants to get back into local politics.

“I’ve always enjoyed it,” he said. “I’ve always been involved in something and it disappointed me when I left the council, but I had to concentrate on my business.”

Before winning his council seat, he served on the Planning Board and the Maine State Board of Property Tax Review.

“I will lay my resume down against any other candidate,” Morgan said. “I believe in being involved, and not just in talking but in doing things.”

Morgan said he’s running for mayor, not against Macdonald.

“I think he could have done more,” he said. “I think he concentrated on welfare reform and now we need to concentrate on bringing businesses into Lewiston.”
