WILTON — The Wilton Recreation Department concluded its 2015 Swim Program with a variety of activities last week.
Approximately 120 swimmers, ranging in ages from 3 to 15, participated in the seven-week program by attending the half-hour lessons every Monday-Thursday.
Seven instructors and five aides taught the Red Cross-level classes under the direction of Jordan Schanck. The instructors and aides are all local students who have gone through Wilton’s Swim Program themselves.
On Aug. 4, 12 swimmers from the upper classes, along with the aides and instructors, completed the “Rite of Passage” by swimming across the lake and back. On Thursday, the program concluded with the annual festivities of Fun Day.
The day began with the traditional sand building contest, followed by games for the swimmers. The youngest children searched for “hidden treasure” in the water, while some held a triathalon and others had to unfreeze a T-shirt, put it on and then wring the water out of it into a bucket.
The oldest groups challenged the aides and instructors in the Watermelon Tussle, in which a watermelon is lathered with shortening and deposited into the lake. The first team to retrieve the melon and place it on the dock is declared the winner.
Other activities included a hot dog cookout, face-painting, a candy toss and a Jello-eating contest.
