Dave Granlund usually hits the nail on the head with his editorial cartoons. The one from Aug. 23 dealt with the recent report that U.S. highways deaths were up 15 percent.
Is that all?
It was interesting that high speeds, texting, booze and drugs were included in the cartoon. Maine has had its share of highway deaths in the past couple of years and those things were responsible.
The three major roads in Auburn — Center Street, Court Street and Minot Avenue — are out of control when it comes to speeding and texting. But do we see anyone being stopped? Nope. And it will remain that way until the police crack down and start giving tickets with hefty fines, not a slap on the wrist.
