LINCOLN PLANTATION — Fire destroyed a camp on the east shore of Aziscohos Lake in northern Oxford County late Sunday afternoon, Rangeley Fire Chief Tim Pellerin said.
It took the Rangeley Fire Rescue Department about 50 minutes to get to scene on Raspberry Lane, traveling 33 miles up Route 16 to Wilsons Mills and seven miles on a dirt road. The department brought 10 firefighters in two trucks and Wilsons Mills had three or four firefighters respond.
The fire was reported at 5:40 p.m. and by the time firefighters arrived there were only burning embers, he said.
The cause is undetermined because there was so much damage, Pellerin said.
The camp was owned by Douglas and Kathryn Burnell of Conway, N.H., according to Paul Hodsdon of Norway, president of the Aziscohos Lake Camping Association. He said the Burnells have owned the camp for years and had been making improvements recently.
