100 years ago, 1915
Fanned by a strong wind, fire rushed thru dry pine tops on the land of Mrs. Elizabeth Reed in the Garfield road, Sunday. Incidentally the better part of 10 cords of wood cut from the top, and owned by J. D. Blair, were consumed. The auto chemical of the Auburn fire department made a quick run and with chemical alone did well to hold the blaze in check.
50 years ago, 1965
The City of Lewiston will just have to wait an extra few weeks for a truck and plow for the Public Works Department, according to a telegram read to the PW Board, Tuesday night. And there appears to be nothing anyone really can do about it. The Oshkosh Motor Truck inc of Oshkosh, Wisc., sent a telegram to the Frink Company which is providing the vehicle for the department. In part, the telegram reads as follows: “Due to top level military rescheduling resulting from the present Viet Nam crisis, our production of commercial vehicles had to be moved back approximately one month.”
25 years ago, 1990
Police, firefighters and members of the city’s road crew joined picketing schoolteachers Monday night marching in front of Edward Little High School as parents and students arrived for a scheduled open house. “We’re in this together,” said Officer Tim Slivinski, present as a member of Local 414, International Brotherhood of Police Officers. “They’re asking the same concessions from all of us. We’ve been working without a contract since July.”
