LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus has announced its November classes, which will take place at the SeniorsPlus Education Center, 8 Falcon Road.

Strength, Neuro, & Light Cardio Training: 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Mondays and 1 to 1:45 p.m. Fridays with instructor Linn Morin, certified trainer — Participants will move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase coordination, muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support. Medicare supplemental insurance (Aetna, Humana, United) may pay tuition.  The cost is $3 for one class per week, $5 for any two classes per week and $6 for any three classes per week. Beginners Balance and Strength Training: 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays with instructor: Linn Morin, certified trainer — These ongoing, twice-weekly classes are designed to improve participants’ quality of life. Participants, standing or sitting, will move to music while increasing strength and balance. Medicare supplemental insurance (Aetna, Humana, United) may pay tuition. The cost is $3 for one class per week, $5 for any two classes per week and $6 for any three classes per week. FMI, register: 207-523-9055.

Matter of Balance: 3 to 5 p.m. Mondays, Nov. 2 to Dec. 21, at Oak Hill High School, 56 School Road, Wales — Classes are held once a week for eight weeks for two hours each. This program emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls. Participants will learn to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, make changes to reduce fall risks at home and exercise to increase strength and balance. The cost is $35.

Tai Chi for Health and Balance: 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, Nov. 4 to Dec. 16, with instructor SeniorsPlus staff members Nate Miller and Pam Piper — Tai chi is a low-impact exercise that works well for older adults because it is performed in slow, fluid movements, which puts minimal stress on bones and joints. Practiced throughout the world for its many health benefits, Tai Chi strengthens and mobilizes joints and muscles, improving physical fitness and mental relaxation. Tai Chi can be done seated or standing, which allows for people to participate at their own ability level. The cost is $35 for the six-week session. Preregistration is required. There will not be a class on Nov. 27. The Dec. 9 class will be held Dec. 8 instead. If needed, due to weather, there will be a class Dec. 18. 

AARP Smart Driver: — 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12: Drivers 55 and older who complete this class are eligible for discounts on their auto insurance for three years. The cost is $20, payable to AARP; $15 for AARP members.

Living with Atrial Fibrillation: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, with instructor Dr. Kathleen Harper, D.O., F.A.C.C., Central Maine Heart Associates: Dr. Harper will explain atrial fibrillation, the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat, a condition in which electrical activity in the heart causes its rate or rhythm to be abnormal. AF may lead to complications and serious heart conditions, and can increase a person’s risk of stroke. She will discuss how AF is detected, evaluated, treated and managed.

Consumer Fraud Protection: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, with instructor Alan Elze: Have you ever bought something and it just stopped working a few months after buying it? Or have you ordered something and never gotten it? Ever had a repair done on your home or vehicle and it just wasn’t right? Come learn what recourse you may have. This class is also offered at the West Paris Public Library via Web-Ex. Please register with SeniorsPlus at 207-795-4010.

Gentle Morning Chair Yoga for Seniors: 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays, Nov. 23 to Jan. 18, 2016, with instructor Tisha Bremner — Designed to increase vitality, gain a deeper sense of balance and find your inner calm. Combines meditation, easy warm-ups, light stretches and gentle yoga postures. The cost is $40 for eight weeks, or $8 per class on a drop-in basis. No class Dec. 28.

The classes are free unless noted. Hearing-assistance equipment is available.
