Essentials of College planning workshop

LEWISTON — The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will host free workshops for adults 19 and older on Thursday, Nov. 12, and Wednesday, Nov. 25.

The workshops, Essentials of College Planning, will take place at 10 a.m. at the Lewiston CareerCenter on 5 Mollison Way.

Blue Star Flag program

AUBURN — Auburn Public Library will continue to honor U.S. military members with an informational presentation on the Blue Star Flag program at noon Thursday, Nov. 12.

Frank Roma, who coordinates the program for the city of Auburn, will be at the library to provide an overview of the program including eligibility requirements.

The Blue Star Flag program honors residents who are waiting for a loved one to return home from defending our nation’s freedom. Family members of servicemen and women who are currently deployed overseas in combat areas are invited to receive a Blue Star Flag to hang in their homes as a symbol of support from the entire city for their service.

Auburn residents who are parents or spouses of servicemen or women who meet the deployment criteria are eligible to receive a Blue Star Flag. The Blue Star Flag will be presented to the family during an Auburn City Council meeting.

AREA to meet Nov. 12

LEWISTON — The Androscoggin Area Retired Educators will hold their fall meeting at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Green Ladle.

The guest speaker will be a representative from the Maine State Music Theatre at Bowdoin.

Those attending should bring non-perishable foods or a monetary donation for the local food pantry.

New members are always welcome to join AREA. Dues are $10 for the year for retired educators and $6 for spouses.

Danville Junction Grange 65 to meet

DANVILLE — Danville Junction Grange 65 will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12.

A Thanksgiving program will be presented by lecturer Thelma Quimby, followed by refreshments at the close of the meeting.

Members are reminded to bring any coupons that they have clipped for the service members.

Pine Cone Chapter 26 meeting Nov. 12

AUBURN — Pine Cone Chapter 26, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Masonic Hall, 1021 Turner St.

The chapter will honor veterans and Honor Flight Maine.

A potluck supper will precede the meeting at 6 p.m.

Thistle Farms founder to give talk

LEWISTON — Becca Stevens, founder of Thistle Farms, a social enterprise for women who have survived prostitution, trafficking and addiction, will discuss her work at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives at Bates College, 70 Campus Ave.

An author, popular speaker and Episcopal priest, Stevens will offer the talk, “Burning Desire: Our Longing for Justice and Hope for Healing,” in a civic forum sponsored by the Harward Center for Community Partnerships at Bates. Her Bates appearance is part of a series of events she’s offering in Maine.

The event is open to the public at no cost.
