LEWISTON — A recount on the School Committee Ward 4 vote will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, City Clerk Kathleen Montejo said Thursday.

It is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Council Chamber of City Hall.

Incumbent Jim Handy requested the recount Tuesday, Montejo said.

In the Nov. 3 election, Handy narrowly lost to Benjamin Martin by 24 votes, 597-573.

Handy, who has served on the committee for decades, is chairman.

Handy said he was compelled to ask for a recount after “someone in my ward knocked on my door the morning after and insisted I ask for a recount,” Handy said Thursday. “That put it in perspective for me.

“It’s important for those who cast a vote on my behalf rather than wonder ‘what if,'” Handy said.

When Martin announced he was running, he said he’d bring new blood to the committee. He cited disappointments, including the way the proficiency-based diploma was rolled out last year and overcrowded elementary schools.

When announcing his bid for re-election, Handy cited his leadership and his knowledge of federal, state and local education policy which would allow him to best serve students and families.
